What are Variable Expenses and How are They Used to Determine Child Support?

When parents share placement of the child or children, in addition to considering child support, the court can also enter orders regarding variable expenses. Variable expenses include expenses such as the cost of joining football, the cost of hockey, the cost of piano lessons, Girl Scouts, or any of those other extracurricular activities that your children may be involved in. Generally speaking, the variable expenses will be allocated to each parent consistent with the percentage of time that parent has placement with the children.
