What Does it Mean to Impute Income?

The concept of imputed income can be brought into consideration when the court is asked to determine child support or maintenance. The idea behind imputed income is that one parent is under employed or simply not working to the level of their earning capacity. In that case, the other parent can ask the court to consider past earning history, the abilities of the other parent at this point in time and ask to impute the actual salary that parent should be able to make.
