Two legal giants started Lawton & Cates more than 50 years ago, establishing a firm with a reputation for excellence. Throughout its history, firm lawyers have carried on their tradition of providing top-quality legal services to workers, the injured, consumers and business clients from the trial court level up to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lawton & Cates concentrates on representing people injured in accidents, business litigation, civil rights and employment, construction law, consumer law, criminal law, family law and workers compensation. The firm also has deep expertise in large complex cases, including class action lawsuits.

Founders John Lawton and Richard Cates opened their firm with the dual goals of representing clients and training the next generation of litigators, an enduring custom.  Community involvement is another firm tenet - Lawton & Cates lawyers helped create the Consumer Law Litigation Clinic at University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.

The firm's long history of excellence and integrity, as well as its strong track record on behalf of clients, helped earn Lawton & Cates an AV-rating and listing in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. Five of the firm's attorneys have also been named to the 2012 Wisconsin Super Lawyers or Rising Stars lists: James A. Olson, James W. Gardner, Kent I. Carnell, Dixon R. Gahnz and Kathryn A. Harrell McKnight.
