The attorneys at Lawton & Cates have established a reputation for excellence in litigation. Lawton & Cates was founded from the partnership of John A. Lawton and Richard L. Cates over 50 years ago. John Lawton was a premier labor lawyer in Wisconsin for decades. He was best known for his role in authoring Wisconsin’s public bargaining laws. Richard Cates established the firm’s litigation practice and served as Special Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate hearings. The tradition of excellence and integrity initiated by John Lawton and Richard Cates continues today. The experienced litigators at Lawton & Cates have a tradition of mentoring the up and coming lawyers who have already distinguished themselves in their chosen areas of law. These traits and the firm’s teamwork approach have allowed lawyers at the firm to achieve successful results for their clients. When asked about his work, James A. Olson said, “The most rewarding part of my work is being able to help people. My clients generally are facing a very devastating period in their lives, and more than not I’ve been able to help them through these situations.”
